An award was presented to Harrogate Lions Club by the Harrogate Hospital Trust for its continuous 25 years of support at a special event held in December. Knaresborough Lions were presented with a 10-year award.

Christmas Festivities at the Spa

The Bridlington Lions club hosted their annual FREE concert at the Spa Royal Hall as a thank you to the Public for their support.
Over 1200 people turned out on a wet and windy night, including over 500 brought in on Coaches by other Clubs in the area.
The excellent Concert of Carols and Christmas Music was provided by Driffield Silver Band, The Bridlington Classic Pop Singers and the Burlington Junior School Choir. Everyone joined in the singing, this included a special version of the Twelve Days Of Christmas in which the audience were divided into twelve sections, one for each verse, directed by 12 Lions with a board each. Amazingly it worked!!
With a special round of applause for the young school choir, it seemed all had enjoyed a wonderful evening to start off the Christmas Festivities.

Knaresborough’s Mulled Wine a Hit

The Christmas Market held in Knaresborough over the 1st weekend in December continues to be a ma-jor attraction for visitors seeking seasonal fare. The annual event, which the Lions help organise with local Rotary and Chamber of Trade groups, draws in people from across the North of England attracted by the unusual and offbeat produce on the market stalls, the street entertainment … by no means a distant third … the mulled wine and hot punch served up by the town’s Lions club.
“The mulled wine uses a special recipe which year- on- year has proved a great hit,” said Lion President Phil Oldfield. “Our takings this year were the largest ever, suggesting that word has really got around. Proceeds will go to various Lions appeals and local causes.”

Bramley & Wickersley Lions Club

On Sunday at Bramley Market a lady asked me if we had any “message in a bottles”, unfortunately we did not. She went on to tell me that she had collected two from us at the Bramley Carnival earlier in the year. She kept one and gave one to her friend.
Unfortunately both these ladies had been taken ill, one quite seriously, in the intervening period and both had been rushed to hospital (one unconscious). But as they both had MIAB‟s the paramedics were able to get all the information they needed in order to ensure that both these ladies were able to be treated quickly and efficiently.
As a new club, we have not given out many MIAB‟s yet, but this story certainly proves their worth.
I will drop off the extra bottles that she asked for later today, and at the next meeting I will be proposing that we use some of the sleigh money to buy a stock of MIAB‟s so that we may be able to help others.

Huddersfield Lions Club Santa Dash

What is it? A walk, stagger, stroll or if you are very enthusiastic, a run round the streets of Huddersfield on a route measuring about one mile, wearing a Santa suit if an adult or reindeer antlers and flashing nose if a child 10 years old and younger.
We held our first Santa Dash on 11th December 2011 and were lucky enough to secure the use of a vacant shop right in the town centre, which gave us a dry and comfortable administration area, well away from the extremely wet weather.
With a mass start following a warm-up session led by the Huddersfield Giants and with music from a local youth band and from Holmfirth & Meltham‟s Club sleigh, we felt for a first event, it was very successful, with £2,500 raised by 19 charities from the town.

We were well supported at the „free raffle‟ by 1st Vice District Governor‟s Ken Wild and his Lady Sylvia, who made contact with 2 potential new Lions, both quite young (certainly by Huddersfield standards!).
From the raffle, we secured lots of very useful email contacts, and from local donors were able to cover our administration charges, including a donation of £500 from the local VW dealership, who lent us a car to have a “guess the number of balloons inside the car” competition.
We learned a lot at this first try and plan to make it an annual project helping local charities to use the Lions organisational ability to raise funds for their own cause. In this way we continue to “Serve” in our local community.

Warmer than the beaches of the Costa Del Sol!

Withernsea and District Lions Club‟s Boxing Day Dip was the most successful ever with 54 dippers entering the cool North Sea! After last year‟s temperatures of 12 degrees and having to cancel until New Year‟s Day this year it was a balmy 13 degrees!
The Dip has helped to raise money for many local charities including RNLI, Fire-fighter‟s Charity, Marie Curie, Withernsea and District Lions Club and HM Coastguard as all dippers choose their own charity making a small donation to Withernsea Lions Club.
One of the dippers was Lion John Sheard who only joined the Club in December, perhaps not quite what he expected but he couldn‟t have picked a better year to do the dip.
A warm drink awaited the dippers as they came out of the sea and there was a super atmosphere with many onlookers on the promenade. The safety of the dippers was ensured by the assistance of Withernsea inshore lifeboat crew and the local Coastguard.
